How do I access the backend of my TYPO3 website?
To create or edit content, please access your website's backend. To do so, append “/typo3” to your website’s URL, for example:
www.your-website.tum.de/typo3/
Then log in with your TUM username and password. Alternatively, you can use your TUM email address (ending in @tum.de or @mytum.de) together with your password.
If you do not yet have access to the backend, you will need to register first.
Why was my TYPO3 backend account deactivated?
For security reasons, backend user accounts are automatically deactivated if they have not been actively used for more than 180 days. To regain access, please reach out to your editors-in-chief.
Can I track my website?
We use the analytics tool “Matomo” to evaluate website data.
If tracking has not yet been set up for your website and you would like to receive web statistics in the future, please email us. Include the URL of your website, as well as the individuals authorised to access the analytics (including their TUM usernames and email addresses).
Once the setup is complete, the specified users will be granted access to the analytics data.
Can I provide a website in English only?
Only valid for professorships/chairs and projects!
Do you want to offer your website only in English? Have you already created your website in both German and English? Follow these steps for the conversion:
- Edit the English Content Element (CE).
- Switch to the “Language” tab.
- Important: Disconnect it from the existing German CE, as it will be deleted if the German CE is removed. You can do this by leaving the Transl. Orig field empty.
- Change the Language option of the English CE to German. Then save and close.
- Delete the original German CE.
Repeat the steps for each translated CE.
Ensure that all CEs are set to Language “German” – not “ALL”. Once all content on a page has been corrected, delete the English page and rename the German page with an English title. Essentially, you will only maintain content in the German section of the pages, but with English text.
Please contact us after the conversion, and we will set the ‘start language’ to English.
Please make sure that all newly created content elements have the setting “Default Language=German.”
Also, share this information with colleagues who are working editorially on the site.
Why isn’t an English content element showing up in the frontend?
When translating your website, it is important to follow the translation procedure exactly as described. Please make sure you complete the steps in the recommended order.
Possible Cause
The content element is not linked to its German original element. In most cases, this happens because the translation was not created using the standard translation wizard.
How to Identify the Problem
- Correctly linked elements appear indented below the German element in the List view.
- Unlinked elements appear without indentation and are displayed as independent records.
Solution
- Open the English content element for editing.
- Go to the “Language” tab.
- In the “Translation Source” field, select the corresponding German content element.
- Save your changes.
What should I do if a name is too long for navigation and doesn't wrap?
If a very long navigation name doesn't automatically wrap, follow these steps:
- Edit the page.
- Disable the toggle “Synchronise URL Segment”.
- In addition to the "Page Title" field, enter the (long) menu name in the "Alternative Navigation Title" field.
- In the "Alternative Navigation Title" field, insert the string at the point where you want the line break to occur.
- To ensure everything is correct, check that the character is not included in the "URL Segment" field.
- Finally, click “save + close”.
This procedure also applies to elements in the right column.
How can I change the url path?
- Enter the name you want to appear in the URL path in the "Page Title" field and save the input (without closing).
- Turn off "Synchronise URL Segment."
- Now, re-enter the "correct" name of the page (which should also be displayed in the menu item) in “Page Title”.
- Save and close.
Can I create redirects myself?
No, unfortunately, this is not possible.
Please send us a message with the requested changes. Ideally, provide them in a table containing the old and new URLs.
What can I do if I accidentally deleted content/pages?
If you have accidentally deleted pages or content, you may be able to "recover" them. Please contact the editor-in-chief with details about the page names or page IDs. Pages/content are permanently deleted after 400 days in an automated process. Here, you can find a step-by-step guide.
I can’t see the deleted content in the Recycler. What should I do?
Check the following:
- Is the correct page selected in the page tree?
- Is the search depth set high enough? Try selecting Infinite.
- Is the correct record type selected?
What is the folder "_my_direct_uploads" and what is it used for?
Every website has a folder named "_my_direct_uploads" in its file list, which cannot be deleted.
This folder is used by the TYPO3 system when you save files without considering the folder structure. We recommend using your own folders and subfolders to organise files. Here are the instructions.
What is the maximum file size I can upload?
Files larger than 64 MB cannot be uploaded to the file list. Larger files can be uploaded, shared, and linked through the NAS-Filer or via Sync+Share. If this isn't a suitable solution for you, please feel free to reach out to us.
Can I preview hidden (inactive) page elements?
There are two options for previewing hidden page elements:
- Duplicate the page and select “Hide in menu”
The page will not be displayed in the navigation menu, but it can still be accessed and viewed externally. No TYPO3 login required. - Deactivate the page
When a page is disabled, TYPO3 generates a preview in which hidden elements are also displayed. A TYPO3 login is required for this option.
How can I archive content (e.g., for a restructuring)?
The easiest way is to create a new folder called “Archive” in the page tree and copy or move the desired content into it. Set this folder and its contents to ‘disabled’. We are happy to assist you with this if needed.
Why is the order of the content elements different in the translation than in the original?
This is a bug in TYPO3 itself. It has been known since version 7 of the CMS and, unfortunately, remains unaddressed. More information can be found in the official TYPO3 bug tracker.
