Image cropping
The "Image Manipulation" feature allows you to crop images directly within the TYPO3 backend - without the need for external image editing software.
Important
Image cropping is only available to chief editors upon request from the TYPO3 team. To have this feature enabled, please contact us.
Opening the image crop tool
- Open a "Text & Media" content element.
- Click on an attached image in the media list.
- In the image metadata section, the "Open Editor" button will appear.
- Click "Open Editor".
- The image editor opens in a new window.
Using the image editor
The editor provides the following functions:
- Crop: Drag a selection frame over the desired area of the image.
- Rotate/Flip: Rotate the image in 90° increments or flip it horizontally or vertically.
- Aspect Ratio: Crop freely or use predefined ratios (e.g. 16:9, 4:3).
Notes
If you need an image to appear in different aspect ratios later (for example, in a gallery and as a teaser image), upload the original image as well as separate cropped versions as individual files.
Cropping an image in the TYPO3 backend does not modify the original file. Instead, TYPO3 creates a new image variant, while the original image and its quality remain unchanged.
